A mature soil colony keeps thousands of blind foraging workers probing the top foot of soil around your foundation around the clock — whether or not anything is waiting for them. Stations put bait in their path, and the workers haul it home and share it. The catch is the word program. A station system works when it rings the structure at measured spacing and gets opened, inspected, and re-baited every year. A few stakes pushed into a flowerbed is not that — and that gap is where most "bait doesn't work" stories come from.

How a bait station actually kills a colony

Remember where this termite lives: the colony is in the soil, often spread past your property line, and only the workers commute up into your framing to feed. A fast-acting product kills the termites standing at the station and teaches the colony to avoid the spot — you win a station and lose the war. A slow one rides the colony's own food-sharing habit deeper than any injection could reach, on a schedule of weeks to months. That pace is also why day one of a real program includes direct, non-repellent spot treatment at active entry points: the termites getting in today are dealt with immediately, while the bait works on the colony behind them.

Are they worth it compared to a liquid barrier?

The classic alternative is trenching the foundation and saturating the soil with termiticide. A barrier can protect a structure, but it's a fence, not a kill — the colony stays alive in the yard, probing for the one gap, while the barrier fades silently in the soil with nothing to tell you it's gone. Stations flip the logic: grams of bait in sealed, capped stations instead of gallons saturated along the foundation, working toward the colony itself — and they double as monitoring, opened and inspected at every annual service visit. In a yard with vegetable beds, fruit trees, and drip lines, that difference is the whole point.

Why hardware-store bait stakes disappoint
