Ticks in the San Gabriel Valley

Ticks ride in from brushy edges and trails on pets and people. Here's how to identify them and cut the risk in your yard.

Quick ID
  • Small, flat, 8 legs (arachnids, not insects)
  • Brown to reddish-brown; engorged ones swell grey-blue
  • Wait on grass and brush tips for a host
  • Common where yards meet brush, canyons, trails
  • Can carry disease — prompt removal matters

What they look like

Ticks are small, flat, eight-legged arachnids — relatives of spiders, not insects. Unfed, they range from sesame-seed to apple-seed size and are brown to reddish-brown; after feeding they swell up grey and round. The ticks seen most around SGV homes are the Pacific Coast tick — most at home in our dry foothills and chaparral — and the western black-legged tick in cooler, moister spots; the brown dog tick is a third, dog-associated species that can also turn up indoors.

Because they're so flat and slow-moving, ticks are easy to miss until they've attached — often in a warm, hidden spot on a pet or person.

Where they live

Ticks don't fly or jump. They shelter in leaf litter, then climb onto the tips of grass and low brush to wait for a host — a behavior called questing — then grab onto a host that brushes past. That's why tick pressure is highest where a yard meets brush, canyons, trails or tall grass, common along the SGV foothills.

The brown dog tick is the exception: it can complete its whole life cycle indoors and in kennels, so a dog can carry it home and start a problem inside.

Signs of a tick problem

Most often the first sign is finding a tick on a pet or family member after time outdoors — check ears, the neck, between toes and skin folds. In a yard, ticks cluster along fence lines, shaded edges and the border with brush rather than in open, sunny lawn.

A dog returning from somewhere tick-heavy can bring them indoors, so repeated finds inside point to the brown dog tick.

How ticks are controlled

Yard control targets the edges: trimming brush and tall grass, clearing leaf litter, and keeping a buffer between the lawn and wild vegetation, then treating the harborage zones where ticks quest. Indoors, the brown dog tick needs a more thorough approach.

Coordinate with your veterinarian on pet tick prevention — that combination protects both the yard and the animals that carry ticks in. Our tick control focuses on the brushy edges, and the SGV pest calendar covers seasonal timing. Questions about your property? Get in touch.

Quick Answers

Quick Answers.

Where do ticks come from in my yard?

Ticks wait on the tips of grass, brush and leaf litter for a host to brush past, so they concentrate where your yard meets brush, canyons, trails or tall grass. Pets and people pick them up at those edges and carry them in.

Are ticks dangerous?

Some ticks can transmit diseases to people and pets, which is why prompt, complete removal matters. Most bites don't lead to illness, but the risk is real enough that reducing tick habitat and using vet-recommended pet prevention is worthwhile.

When is tick season in the San Gabriel Valley?

Ticks are most active in the warmer months, but Southern California's mild climate means they can persist much of the year. The SGV pest calendar shows when activity tends to peak locally.

How do I keep ticks off my pets?

Combine yard work with veterinary prevention: trim brush and grass, clear leaf litter, keep pets out of brushy edges, and use a vet-recommended tick product. Check pets over after walks near trails or canyons.

How should I remove an attached tick?

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull straight out with steady pressure, then clean the area. Avoid twisting or crushing it, and watch the bite site afterward.

Can ticks live inside my house?

Most ticks can't complete their life cycle indoors — but the brown dog tick can, including in kennels and homes. If you keep finding ticks inside, that species is the likely culprit and needs indoor treatment, not just yard work.
