Cockroaches in the San Gabriel Valley
Seeing one roach usually means many more are hidden. Here's how to identify them and why the species changes everything.
- German: small (1/2 in), tan, two dark stripes
- American: large (1.5–2 in), reddish-brown 'water bug'
- German breed indoors in kitchens and baths
- American come up from drains and crawl spaces
- Droppings like coffee grounds; musty smell
What they look like
Three roaches turn up in SGV homes. The German cockroach is small (about 1/2 inch), tan, with two dark stripes behind the head — and it's the one that breeds indoors. The American cockroach is the big one (1.5–2 inches), reddish-brown, often called a 'water bug.' The Oriental cockroach is dark and glossy and tends to come up from drains.
Telling German from American matters because each species needs a completely different treatment — getting the ID right is half the job.

| How fast they multiply | Very fast — breeds indoors | Slower, outdoor-based | Slower, outdoor-based |
Where they live
German roaches stay close to warmth, moisture and food: behind refrigerators and dishwashers, under sinks, and in the seams of kitchen and bathroom cabinets. They rarely stray far from the kitchen.
American and Oriental roaches are mostly outdoor and sub-structure insects — sewers, drains, crawl spaces, garages and water-meter boxes — that wander indoors, especially in summer heat or when it rains. A roach in the garage at night is usually one of these, not a German infestation. In much of Southern California the Turkestan cockroach, a look-alike invader, has largely replaced the true Oriental in this outdoor role — it's handled the same way.
Signs of a cockroach problem
Look for droppings that resemble coffee grounds or ground pepper in drawers and along cabinet edges, small dark egg cases (oothecae), and a musty odor when numbers climb. Greasy smear marks show up in damp areas.
Seeing roaches in daylight is a red flag: roaches are nocturnal, so daytime activity usually means the hidden population has grown large enough to push some into the open.
How cockroaches are controlled
The fix follows the species. German roaches call for gel baits, growth regulators and tight sanitation inside the kitchen — foggers and sprays just scatter them. American and Oriental roaches are handled at the source: drain treatment, exclusion and an exterior perimeter so they stop wandering in.
Our cockroach control starts by confirming the species, then targets where that roach actually lives. If you're also seeing droppings overhead or in the garage, it's worth ruling out rats and mice, which leave similar signs.

Quick Answers
Quick Answers.
How do I know if I have German or American cockroaches?
Size and location are the giveaways. German roaches are small (about 1/2 inch), tan with two stripes, and stay in the kitchen or bathroom. American roaches are big (1.5–2 inches), reddish-brown, and usually come from drains, garages or outside.
Does seeing one cockroach mean an infestation?
For German roaches especially, one in the open usually means many more hidden nearby, since they're nocturnal and shy. A single large roach from a drain or garage can be a lone wanderer, but it's worth watching for more.
Why do cockroaches keep coming back after I spray?
Sprays and foggers kill what they touch but miss the protected harborage where roaches and egg cases hide, and they can scatter a German population into new areas. Baiting and growth regulators reach the hidden insects that sprays don't.
Are cockroaches a health concern?
They can be. Cockroaches travel through drains and waste and can carry germs onto food surfaces, and their droppings and shed skins are a well-documented asthma and allergy trigger, particularly for children.
Why do I see cockroaches after it rains?
Heavy rain and summer heat push American and Oriental roaches out of drains, sewers and crawl spaces and up into garages and homes looking for drier ground. These are usually wanderers from outside rather than a kitchen-breeding German population.
Can cockroaches climb up drains into my house?
Yes. American and Oriental roaches travel through sewer and drain lines and can come up through floor drains, dried-out traps, and gaps around pipes. Keeping drains in use and sealing pipe penetrations cuts off that route.
